Düsseldorf shopping: From avant-garde to high-end fashion

CultureDüsseldorfEuropeLuxury TravelShopping

With its wealth of quirky stores and exclusive boutiques, Düsseldorf attracts shoppers from all over Western Germany and beyond. Whether you’re looking for designer-label fashion, antiques or a flea market bargain, here are some of the best places to go browsing.

The “Kö”

If you’re a lover of high-end fashion, you won’t be in Düsseldorf long before someone mentions the Königsallee, or “Kö” for short.

The Kö is a wide, tree-lined boulevard with an ornamental canal running down its centre. It has an almost park-like feel. It’s also where you’ll find outlets of the world’s top designer brands.

From Hugo Boss and Prada to Gucci and Chanel, almost everyone is here. They’ve set up shop alongside equally upmarket local jewellers, trendy boutiques and antiques shops.

Altstadt boutiques

Düsseldorf’s Altstadt, or Old Town, is home to art studios, fashion boutiques and avant-garde curiosity shops.

Here you’ll encounter places such as the Mustard Museum and Shop, which sells the locally made “Lion” brand. If you have a sweet tooth, you may prefer the Gut & Gerne Schokolade chocolatier.

For handcrafted jewellery, you can pop into Galerie Cebra. If you’re in the market for customised clothing and household items, try Romantiklabor, a few minutes’ walk south from the Altstadt.

Düsseldorf markets

Explore Düsseldorf’s backstreets on any weekend and you stand a good chance of coming across a flea market in full swing. They sell second-hand books, vinyl albums and even furniture. Bartering is welcomed.

For your everyday food needs, you’ll find a large daily market on Carlsplatz.

If you’re visiting the city in December you’ll be able to check out one of Germany’s largest and most popular Christmas markets. It sets up at several locations across the Altstadt.

Other shopping areas

Schadowstrasse may lack the showy boutiques of nearby Kö, but its shops are no less busy. Most high-street fashion chains and shoe shops are here, alongside department stores such as Schadow Arkaden.

Düsseldorf has a surprisingly large Japanese community, and many have shops on Immermannstrasse. Whether you’re searching for a bento box, a kimono or an ornamental vase, this is the place to find it.

Considered Düsseldorf’s landmark department store, Carsch-Haus fills several floors of a classic Jugendstil building.
