Hofbräuhaus – The Tourist Favorite

The Hofbräuhaus is an iconic Munich destination and arguably the most popular beer hall in the world. This historic 1589 establishment is surrounded by Munich hotels, making it easy to book a room nearby. With food from the in-house butchery, beer from the Hofbräuhaus brewery, and traditional Bavarian musical performances, you’re guaranteed an authentic taste of Germany.

Try the rich home brewed Hofbräu Dark or bitter Hofbräu Original, each €8,00 per liter. Hofbräuhaus specialty meals feature an adventurous range of options including roast of Bavarian suckling pig, escalope of Bavarian veal, and goulash of Alpine ox. Prices for these filling meals range from €9,90 to €17,90.

Weisses Bräuhaus – Versatile Options on Tap

Expect a crowded atmosphere at the Weisses Bräuhaus, where you will find as many locals as visitors. Specializing in wheat beer known as Weissbier, this beer hall has eight Schneider Weiss varieties on tap.

The menu includes helpful pairing suggestions so you can carefully curate your flavor combinations. Try the savory potato soup with the Tap 3 alcohol-free Mein Alkoholfreies, homemade meatballs with the full-bodied Tap 7 Unser Original, or local leberknödel and sauerkraut with the sweet Tap 5 Meine Hopfenweisse. As an added bonus, children up to age eight eat free. Beers range from €3,10 to €4,70 for a half-liter, and most dishes are under €10.

Located in an unassuming industrial neighborhood, the Augustiner Bräustuben is easy to miss. The atmosphere is more subdued and less crowded than other popular beer halls. The Augustiner beers from the on-site brewery are wildly popular, particularly among locals. These brews are served ice cold and fresh from the barrel. With prices ranging from €5,30 to €5,90 for a liter, this is also one of the most affordable options in town.

Though the food menu is small and simple, the items are prepared extremely well. The crispy knuckle of pork is a particular favorite.  Dishes range from just €7,20 for Munich-style grilled meatloaf with fried egg and potato salad to €14,30 for half of a Bavarian duck.

Augustiner-Keller – Simple Menus and Diverse Seating Options

With an indoor beer hall and the second largest beer garden in Munich, the Augustiner-Keller offers an unforgettable experience in any weather. This destination dates back to the early 19th-century. The drink menu is hardly extensive, with just three alcoholic beers and one non-alcoholic option. However, these beers are sure to please with their mild flavor poured fresh from the barrel. The Augustiner Edelstoff is a favorite at just €3,90 for a half-liter.

Main dishes range from €9,20 for Svabian style ravioli to €19,95 for an extensive tour of local flavors with a mixed compound of suckling pig, grilled sausages, roasted duck, pork knuckle, sauerkraut, potato dumpling, and vegetables.

Löwenbräukeller – Beer Hall Elegance

The Löwenbräukeller distinguished itself from the first. On its opening day in 1883, this was the first beer hall to feature table linens. Throughout the years, it has maintained an elegant atmosphere that sets it apart from many competitors. The restaurant’s signature Löwenbräu Original lager features a full flavor and low original wort content. This beer hall also serves Franziskaner wheat beers, a full-bodied Löwenbräu dark, the strong Löwenbräu Triumphator, and the half-lemonade, half-beer Radler and Russ beverages.

Beers here are on the pricier end at €9,00 for a liter. The menu is small but diverse with options like a beef loaf with two fried eggs and fried potatoes for €9,50, a Würstl plate with sausage specialties for €13,40, and Wiener Schnitzel with friend potatoes, lingonberries, and salad for €21,50.

Der Pschorr – Fine Dining in Munich

Der Pschorr approaches both their food and beer with an eye to gourmet flavors and timeless techniques. This is an expensive option among its beer hall competitors, but it is worth a stop if you’re interested in a luxury dining experience. The beer is served fresh from oak wood barrels chilled on blocks of ice. The restaurant’s specialty is the Hacker-Pschorr premium lager. All beers are €4,70 for a half-liter.

The menu features free-range beef from rare Murnau-Wedenfels cattle. The Der Pschorr specialty is the Bavarian Sauerbraten with homemade bread dumpling and red cabbage. Meals range from about €14,90 for vegetarian options like the cheese dumplings on roasted root vegetables to €32,90 for a beef loin with port wine sauce.

Bratwurstherzl – Friendly Local Flavor

Bratwurstherzl has proudly served patrons since 1633. It’s beer menu features Hacker-Pschorr beers including Münchner Hell, Dunkle Weisse, and Naturtrübes Kellerbier Munich Dark on tap. Edelhell is served from wooden barrels. Most beers are around €4,00 for a half-pint. The Bavarian menu includes a daily €6,80 special Monday through Saturday as well as original Nuremberg sausages and local specialties like homemade kässpatzen and fresh Munich weißwürst.

Dine in the brick vault where sausages are grilled over an open beechwood fire or head out to the cozy beer garden. This small establishment is a little-known local gem.
