Holyrood Park

Admission: Free.
Suggested length of visit: 1-2 hours.
Tips: Check for road and path closures before visiting, which happen on certain days, seasons or because of weather or other circumstances.

There is so much you can see and do at Holyrood Park. Full of history and archaeology, this royal park is located right in the heart of Edinburgh but isn’t a part of the hustle and bustle of the crazy city life. Go on a relaxing walk, see all kinds of wildlife, learn about some of its history and take in the breathtaking views from various points throughout the park. With its hills, cliffs and three lochs (or lakes as you might call them), Holyrood Park gives Edinburgh a very distinctive skyline, making it the perfect backdrop for all your Instagram and Facebook vacation album photos.

Arthur’s Seat

Admission: Free.
Suggested length of visit: 1-2 hours.
Tips: Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes and bring water.

While in Holyrood Park, you have to go to its tallest point, which is also the tallest point in all of Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is a peak sitting on top of an extinct volcano 251 meters above sea level. It’s one of the park’s hill forts that has been around for nearly 2,000 years. Because it puts you on top of the city, Arthur’s Seat gives you one of the best views of Edinburgh and its surrounding areas. Although a climb is involved to get to this site, once you get to the top you’ll see why it’s worth it. A great time to be there is early in the morning so you can watch the sun rise.

Calton Hill

Admission: Free.
Suggested length of visit: 1-2 hours.
Tips: Bring a camera and make sure there’s plenty of space to hold photos.

Calton Hill is another lookout hill in Edinburgh, but some people like this spot better than Arthur’s Seat because it’s not as much of a climb and you get a more detailed view of buildings and monuments since you’re not as high up. From the top you get a panoramic view of the city, so it’s a great viewing spot and provides perfect photo ops. Also, on and around Calton Hill are numerous iconic monuments and buildings to see, learn about and take pictures of or with.

Princes Street Gardens

Admission: Free.
Suggested length of visit: 1-2 hours.
Tips: Go in the spring or summer to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful flowers and plants.

Relax and enjoy fresh air and sunshine while being surrounded by vibrant blossoms at Princes Street Gardens. Take a stroll around the public park, have a picnic lunch with your family in the cool green grass or visit Edinburgh Castle, as this area surrounds it. There is a West Princes Street Gardens and an East Princes Street Gardens. In the West Gardens you’ll find the floral clock. This popular tourist attraction is a giant working clock decorated with thousands and thousands of small, colorful flowers and plants in the summer and more hardy plants during wintertime.

With its combination of architecture, historical landmarks, rolling hills and green, Edinburgh is a great place to visit and one of the most picturesque places to visit. Don’t miss out on all the photo ops this Scottish city gives you!
